Our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Interns provide counseling about your prescription medications, potential side effects and drug interactions. We can also help you choose the best over-the-counter (OTC) medication for your needs.

Our Pharmacy can fill any valid prescription issued by a healthcare provider licensed to practice in the United States.
Who can Fill a Prescription?
- KU Students
- KU Faculty, Staff and Affiliates
- Dependents of KU Faculty, Staff and Affiliates
- The employee must first call 785-864-9494 to request to add a dependent to our records system. The employee must also complete the KU Employee/Dependent Authorization Form. You may request a printable version of this form by emailing our Registration & Records Office at whs-notifications@ku.edu.
- KU Retirees
- Student Spouses/Domestic Partners
- The student must accompany the spouse/domestic partner on the initial visit and complete a Spouse/Domestic Partner Guarantor form. You may request a printable version of this form by emailing our Business Office at whs-billing-insurance@ku.edu.
- Participants of KU Hosted Camps
How to Fill a Prescription
- Bring your prescription to the pharmacy.
- Have your provider call in the prescription to 785-864-9531, fax it to 785-812-0210 or send it electronically. If your provider has difficulties locating our pharmacy electronically, it appears as Watkins Health Center Pharmacy in most systems.
- Bring your insurance card if you have one.
- Pick up your prescription within six days after your order.
How to Refill a Prescription
To refill a prescription that was last filled at our pharmacy and that has valid refills remaining, it is helpful to know the name of your medication or the prescription number (see package label).
- Call in your refill or
- Come to the pharmacy to request a refill or
- If you are a current student, use secure messaging through your patient portal
If your prescription has run out of refills, we will contact your healthcare provider for you. You may need to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider to renew the prescription. Students may schedule an appointment with a provider at Watkins Health Services.
Please note that Watkins Health Center hours may change due to holidays, semester breaks and the summer school session. This may affect the amount of time it takes to refill your prescription, so please plan refills accordingly.
Transferring Prescriptions to Watkins Pharmacy
Your prescriptions from hometown providers can be transferred to our pharmacy. There are three options to accomplish this:
- Call Watkins Pharmacy at 785-864-9531 and be prepared to provide the name and strength of the medication, the prescription number and the contact information for the other pharmacy.
- Complete a Pharmacy Prescription Transfer Form and bring or fax it (785-812-0210) to our pharmacy. You may request a printable version of our Pharmacy Prescription Transfer Form by emailing whs-notifications@ku.edu.
- You may come by the pharmacy with the medication in its bottle or package and speak with one of our staff members.
Our staff will then contact your hometown pharmacy to transfer your current prescriptions to us. Transferred prescriptions are usually ready in about one business day.
Payment & Insurance
Cash, personal checks and all major credit cards are accepted. Currently enrolled students may choose to have prescriptions and OTC medications billed to their health center account. Most insurance plans are accepted. Watkins Pharmacy is contracted with many Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) such as Medco, Express Scripts, Caremark, Cigna, Aetna, Humana and many others. Please provide your prescription plan ID card to a pharmacy staff member. The pharmacist may need to reference the BIN, Group and/or PCN numbers from your card to process your claim accurately. We are not contracted with Medicare, Medicaid, KanCare or Kaiser.

The pharmacy has a selection of many over-the-counter medications. A special order can also be placed for items not in stock.

Pharmacy FAQ
To get pharmacy prescriptions, you may bring a written prescription from your provider or your most recent Rx bottle. You may also bring contact information for your previous pharmacy so we may contact them. Always bring your prescription plan ID card if you have one.
If you provide our pharmacy staff with the contact information and your prescription number, we will call your previous pharmacy and transfer the information we need. Yes, the pharmacy can accept valid prescriptions directly from hometown doctors. They should call 785-864-9531 to speak to our staff, or call 785-864-9512 to leave a message. We also accept electronic and faxed prescriptions to 785-812-0210.
It is possible but it will be necessary for you to bring your most recent prescription plan ID card. Pharmacy staff will determine coverage from the provided information.
It is optional. Currently, enrolled students may choose to have prescriptions and OTC medications billed to their health center account.
Sorry, our pharmacy does not have a delivery service.
Please contact our pharmacy ahead of time with the name of the person authorized to pick up your prescription for you. Due to patient privacy, we can only release medications to individuals who have been authorized by you.
