Measles Information

Thursday, February 12, 2015

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that the United States recorded 644 cases of Measles (Rubeola) in 2014.  From January 1 through February 6, 2015 there have been 121 cases of measles in 17 states. The majority of people who get measles are unvaccinated.  Measles is still common in many parts of the world and travelers continue to bring the measles into the US where it can spread within a community to groups of people who are unvaccinated.

This CDC advisory has prompted a heightened level of concern for KU students, faculty, and staff because if one case of measles is confirmed on campus, some individuals may be excluded from campus until the outbreak has ended for a period that could exceed 21 days.

KU students are required to show immunity to MMR (Measles, Mumps, and Rubella) by presenting records of immunization to Watkins Health Services (WHS) or by getting immunized.  Evidence of immunity is not mandatory for KU faculty and staff, but may prevent infection or exclusion from campus in a measles outbreak.

In order to avoid this potential interruption, we strongly recommend that you determine your immunization status.  According to the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department, the current recommendations from the CDC and the American Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) are:

  • Adults born prior to 1957 are considered immune to measles and do not need to receive vaccine.
  • Adults born during or after 1957 should have documentation of at least one dose of MMR or evidence of measles immunity.
  • Adults attending college or other post-high school educational institution should have 2 doses of MMR on record or evidence of immunity.

Immunizations and blood tests to determine immunity are available at WHS located at Watkins Memorial Health Center or through your personal health care provider.

Costs for these services at Watkins Health Services are as follows:

MMR Titer:                         Student Fee - $97.00                      Faculty/Staff - $193.10

Measles Titer Only:           Student Fee - $62.40                       Faculty/Staff - $70.80

MMR Vaccine:                   Student Fee - $82.13                       Faculty/Staff - $117.48

If you have questions about measles or immunity please call WHS at 785-864-9500 or if you would like to make an appointment to get immunized or tested, call WHS at 785-864-9507.
