FREE HIV Testing

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

Watkins Health Services offers six free HIV testing events at central campus locations throughout the spring semester for students, faculty and staff.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone who is sexually active get tested for HIV at least once. You should get tested at least once every year if: you are a sexually active gay or bisexual man; you’ve had sex with an HIV-positive partner or someone whose sexual history you don’t know; you’ve shared needles or used injection drugs; you’ve exchanged sex for drugs or money; you’ve had more than one sexual partner since your last HIV test; you’ve been diagnosed with another sexually transmitted infection (STI). Some people may benefit from more frequent testing (every 3-6 months). Discuss your risk and whether you might benefit from more frequent testing at one of the available testing dates.

Testing is particularly important, according to Health Education Program Manager Jenny McKee, because HIV is “asymptomatic, meaning there are no obvious signs you’ve contracted the virus.”

What to expect:

  • Testing is completely confidential.
  • Testing is done via cheek swab (no blood or needles).
  • Results are available within 20 minutes.
  • Results are provided in-person. Students can also choose to receive their results via secure message through their Watkins Health Services online patient portal. Secure message is not available for faculty and staff.
