Watkins Health Services will host a Drug Take-Back Event on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, from 12 to 3 pm for the KU and Lawrence community. This event is co-hosted by the KU Public Safety Office, KU School of Pharmacy and the KU chapters of American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacy and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.
KU students, faculty, staff and the general public are encouraged to bring their expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs to a convenient drive-up tent in Lot 117 at Watkins Health Center, 1200 Schwegler Drive. Items not accepted include liquids, needles, syringes and other medical supplies. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
This national initiative of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Rates of prescription drug abuse, accidental poisonings and overdoses in the U.S. are alarmingly high. A majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Commonplace methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
